Ephraim, Wisconsin, the peaceful and picturesque Village on Door County's rocky, thumb- shaped peninsula, has exceptional visual beauty, and a cultural and historical heritage. Ephraim has an unspoiled beauty. Its lawns and luxuriant cedars rise in gentle steps on a wooded hill above one of the loveliest harbors on the Great Lakes, a harbor noted for its magnificent sunsets.
In Summer, the waters are sometimes so smooth they mirror Peninsula State Park's Eagle Bluff across the bay, but usually they are rippled by the wind, making the- bay a delight for sailing. The little Village began to attract vacationers as early as 1900. Anderson Dock was built by Aslag Anderson in 1860, later he added a general store. The first vacationers stayed with villagers who opened their homes to them. Then, as the need grew, hotels and "bed and breakfasts" were built. Ephraim's simplicity and graciousness have survived. Visits to the restored Anderson store and Pioneer School House will take you back to Ephraim's early days. Peninsula State Park, Wisconsin's largest and most popular state park, rests on Ephraim's West shore. Golfers playing at Peninsula's excellent course may have trouble keeping their minds on the game, so beautiful is the scenery toward Ephraim Nearby you will find galleries, shops and restaurants. Ephraim is a place to relax, read, walk and commune with nature. The main activity is on the water, with boats from one end of the Village to the other. Hardy Memorial Gallery houses changing art, photo and craft displays. Modern villagers, mindful of Ephraim's rich heritage, have preserved a good deal of its history. Many buildings still reflect the elegantly simple architecture painted white that is a hallmark of Moravian tradition. Ephraim's name is of biblical origin which literally means "doubly fruitful". In recent years, many artists have sought out the Ephraim area as a haven. These artists and crafts people contribute much to the character and values of Ephraim, as does its musical heritage, all of which complement and reflect the natural beauty of the area.
